A Renewable Energy Credit (REC) is an environmental commodity. RECs help renewable energy facilities, like the wind farms supplying power for Baylor Bear Energy, by making them more financially viable, encouraging growth and the development of new means to collect green energy.

Qualified renewable energy facilities generate RECs when they produce electricity. A REC represents the added value, environmental benefits and cost of renewable energy when compared to other conventional methods of producing electricity, like burning coal or natural gas.

Buying RECs acts like an accounting system. If you buy the same amount of RECs as your usual electricity consumption, you guarantee that 100% of the energy you use will be added back into the power grid from a renewable energy facility.

Anyone, in any geographic location, can buy a REC to help offset their carbon footprint. We will be making the opportunity to buy RECs available to both Baylor Bear Energy members and non-members.
